faux embroidered white dress

Embroidery is everywhere right now and I absolutely can’t get enough of it.  I love the hand-crafted touch that it adds.  Each item, whether it’s a pair of jeans or a clutch, is instantly given more value if it is embroidered.  That’s why I knew I just had to have this dress!  Every girl needs a great little white dress this summer (LWD is the new LBD) and this version takes the cake.  But here’s a twist for you: it’s not actually embroidered, it’s printed!  Did I trick you with that one?  You can’t even tell in the close-up pictures that this is a faux embroidery.  The print is so good, it even fooled me!

Why print the embroidery vs actually embroidering the dress?  It all comes down to one element: cost.  Embroidery can be very expensive during production and in order for asos.com to be able to offer such a killer price point on this dress ($32) they had to get creative.  As a result, a lot of companies have moved to using prints that look like embroidery or using what the industry calls “puff,” which is a foam paint applied to garments to give the appearance of embroidery.  These options literally give the consumer the look for less.

The embroidery print is light blue and black, so grey is a great neutral to pair with it because it softens up those high contrast colors.  Same concept applies to my metallic sandals.  They’re subtle, but the pop of shine elevates the outfit for a night out.  This dress could easily be worn to brunch by switching into a pair of casual flat sandals or suede booties.  There are so many ways to wear it!

That being said, LWD’s can be a little sheer, so make sure you have some good foundation pieces to wear under them.  Below are some great options from Nordstrom that will keep you covered:

Have any other questions regarding these embroidery alternatives and how to spot them?  Need any other suggestions for great foundation pieces?  I’d love to hear from you!  Just comment below or shoot me an email at thestylelodown@gmail.com.

Have a great week!  You’re halfway to Friday 🙂
