Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Top 2 Layering Jackets

I know you’re all hearing a lot about the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale going on right now and if you’re not a Nordstrom card holder you can’t officially shop the sale until this Friday (bummer, I know).  Since not everyone has early access, I thought I’d share some of my fitting room sessions with y’all so you can prepare yourself for the shopping spree!  What I love most about Fall clothing is creating a layered look.  It’s always important to have great lightweight pieces that you can throw on in case temperatures go south.  These are my two favorite everyday layering pieces from the sale!

I actually would buy this jacket up a size for a more dramatic over-sized look, but you can purchase it to be more fitted as well.  I’m wearing the size 12 jacket, which does fit a little big.  It all depends on the look you’re going for as to what size you need to get.  Overall, it’s a very versatile item.   You can pair it with dark wash jeans or light; light wash will give a more 90’s edge to it.  I think it’s PERFECT to throw over a casual black dress with sandals or heels for a cool night out look. It would also be great with a pair of white cut-off shorts when summer nights get chilly.

If there was any closet staple that every girl needed for Fall, it’s a leather jacket!  This one takes the cake because not only is it real leather and 40% off, but it is incredibly comfortable.  I was honestly surprised how much flexibility it had.  I didn’t feel trapped or stiff in the shoulders like some other leather jackets fit.  It’s fully lined and has a full zip closure in the front with silver hardware.  A great moto jacket can go with everything from jeans to shorts, summer floral dresses to long silk slip dresses.  This is an investment item that’s worth every single penny!

I took a little break from social media this weekend to celebrate a friend’s 30th birthday at the beach.  Sometimes we all need a little time to regroup and recharge!  Now that I’ve had the time away I’m ready to bring some fun new content to the blog.  Get ready for new product reviews, shopping guides, beauty videos, and much more.  I can’t wait to share it all with you!

Today’s look is a little cocktail number perfect for a summer engagement party (hello Brides!) or a nice night out.  The dress is  lightweight and easy to wear.  My Carolina girls will appreciate this as the temperatures keep rising in the South.  I’ve paired it with my favorite tassel earrings from BaubleBar.  They come in over 25 colors and are only $36!  While I’ve tied it all together with my nude sandals, you could definitely play up the pops of color by wearing a brighter pair of heels.

red dress for july 4th

Hi everyone! Hopefully most of you are off work today, but if you’re not then I know you can’t wait for the July 4th holiday tomorrow!  I’m ready to spend time at the pool then head to the U.S. National Whitewater Center for music, fun and fireworks!  Trent and I are lucky to live so close to USNWC.  They have plenty of activities to entertain everyone if you go with a group or just for date night.  Last time we were there was Mother’s Day and forced my mother-in-law to do the zip line.  This zip line is no joke and she was a trooper!  Hawk Tower, which is the tallest starting points, stands over 100 feet tall and sends you flying 1,625 feet through the air before continuing to the Figure 8 ropes course in the canopy.  I don’t think we’ll be doing that tomorrow, but maybe we will do some of the water activities like paddle boarding or kayaking.

Either way, this dress is perfect for spending time outside.  Whether you’re on vacation, at a brewery with friends, or wearing it as a cover-up at the lake, this dress is perfect for any day activity.  I love the little fringe detail on the sleeves!  It is a knit dress and feels like you’re wearing one of your favorite t-shirts.  The swing body shape makes it even more comfortable, keeping it lightweight and airy.

I’ve paired it with my favorite saddle bag and my Neon Love Story geode wrap choker necklace.  Unfortunately this necklace is no longer available, so I’ve linked another great option.  You could easily wear this dress for a casual day around town or pair it with flip flops and a tote if you need something to throw over your swimsuit!  That’s how I’ll be wearing it to celebrate July 4th.   I hope you all have a safe and fun holiday!  Make sure you sport your best red, white and blue!

Saturdays are meant for relaxing with friends and enjoying some free time outside of the office.  What better way to do that than in this super comfortable slouchy t-shirt?  Seriously, it is unbelievably soft!  I love the oversized look and the added texture of the ribbed knit.  I’ve paired it with my ripped white denim shorts and my new favorite slides.  They have silver hardware that give them a bit of a vintage, Western-inspired look.  I have a feeling these slides are going to get a lot of wear this summer!

I’ve been thinking more lately about “investment pieces” in my closet.  I can’t say that I have very many of them because I’ve been caught up in the fast fashion cycle.  When I shop I’m primarily focused on getting great trend items, not necessarily staple pieces that will last decades.  Some people may not consider Free People an investment brand.  However, for me it is because the price point is about double of what I would usually spend on clothing.  So when I saw this jacket I knew that I had to have it and that it would be worth every penny because I would have it for years to come.

Not only should you love your investment pieces, but you should see a future with them.  They’re like a marriage: if you don’t want to spend the rest of your life with them, love them, care for them (i.e. pay for dry cleaning) and be ready to mend them when they fall apart (thankfully I have an armory of beads and buttons in my office) then you shouldn’t purchase them.  I definitely saw a future with this embellished Free People jacket!  Right now I’m wearing it as a lightweight third piece to throw on when Summer nights might get a little chilly in my shorts and cami.  I also love how my mirrored sunglasses from go perfectly with it because the gold ties back to the beading.  I can also pair it with a black dress and booties for a killer night out or maybe just throw it on over a t-shirt and leggings when we’re traveling.  I know with time the styles will change and I can find ways to work it in with the latest trends.

One of my sisters displays the textbook symptoms of buyer’s remorse with about 60% of her purchases.  I won’t say which one, but let’s just say I’m happy to wear her clothes for her!  Thankfully I’ve never had this issue.  If anything it’s the opposite!  Which is honestly why I should spend more of my money on investment pieces like this military-inspired jacket that I’ll wear for years versus fast fashion items that might last me a few months.  It’s initially scary forking over the extra money to fund those purchases, but once you wear that item you know you made the right decision.

faux embroidered white dress

Embroidery is everywhere right now and I absolutely can’t get enough of it.  I love the hand-crafted touch that it adds.  Each item, whether it’s a pair of jeans or a clutch, is instantly given more value if it is embroidered.  That’s why I knew I just had to have this dress!  Every girl needs a great little white dress this summer (LWD is the new LBD) and this version takes the cake.  But here’s a twist for you: it’s not actually embroidered, it’s printed!  Did I trick you with that one?  You can’t even tell in the close-up pictures that this is a faux embroidery.  The print is so good, it even fooled me!

Why print the embroidery vs actually embroidering the dress?  It all comes down to one element: cost.  Embroidery can be very expensive during production and in order for to be able to offer such a killer price point on this dress ($32) they had to get creative.  As a result, a lot of companies have moved to using prints that look like embroidery or using what the industry calls “puff,” which is a foam paint applied to garments to give the appearance of embroidery.  These options literally give the consumer the look for less.

The embroidery print is light blue and black, so grey is a great neutral to pair with it because it softens up those high contrast colors.  Same concept applies to my metallic sandals.  They’re subtle, but the pop of shine elevates the outfit for a night out.  This dress could easily be worn to brunch by switching into a pair of casual flat sandals or suede booties.  There are so many ways to wear it!

That being said, LWD’s can be a little sheer, so make sure you have some good foundation pieces to wear under them.  Below are some great options from Nordstrom that will keep you covered:

July 4th Shopping Guide

I can’t believe we are already nearing the end of June and July 4th is right around the corner.  It sneaks up on me every year! Next thing you know, it will be Halloween then Christmas and we will be facing 2018.  It’s crazy how time flies!

In honor of the upcoming holiday, I’ve put together my top picks for any 4th of July occasion.  Whether you’re headed to a BBQ, going to the beach or staying home with your family, I’ve linked everything from great graphic t-shirts to an adorable chambray one-shoulder dress.  I just bought #7 from and it is such a great easy dress!  It’s a knit t-shirt material with cute tassel fringe on the sleeves.  The swing dress shape takes cute and comfy to a whole new level.  It would go perfectly with the #10 espadrilles!  #9 would be adorable with any off-the-shoulder blouse or a cute t-shirt underneath.  Finally, #2 is by far my all-time favorite pick because it’s great to wear all summer long.  What can I say, I’m a sucker for gingham.

It was love at first sight with these denim shorts from  The pearl embellishment is just too perfect!  It’s a little detail that adds a lovely touch of femme to your outfit.  Bonus: they’re trendy and fun, but won’t break the bank at $38.  You can pair them with a cute top for dinner or wear them with your favorite casual tee, which is my personal favorite.  I’ve paired them with this choker neck t-shirt that I scored from Marshalls for less than $15!  Seriously can’t say enough how much I love shopping there because I can always find a great deal.  While I can’t find this exact top, I linked one from Nordstrom by Sanctuary that is really similar. blue stripes + velvet pumps

By now some of you may have noticed that I have this thing with blue and white striped tops (and dresses!) for summer.  Honestly, anything blue and white I find myself lusting after: dishes, shoes, handbags, you name it!  But what makes this one different is that it pairs perfectly with my new pink velvet pumps!  That’s right, I said PINK VELVET.

I snagged these cuties for less than $17 at Marshalls a few weeks ago and I couldn’t wait to share them with you!  Spring/Summer velvet has been a big topic of conversation in trend forecasting.  Producing it in light tones, especially pastels, is an easy way for the fabric to seem visually lighter while maintaining that luxe element that everyone is looking for. I don’t know about you, but this look kind of reminds me of something a modern Barbie would wear and I’m ok with that.  Haha!  It was the first thing I thought when I looked in the mirror.  It’s also possible that it was the pink velvet pumps that made me think of Barbie.  They’re such a big feminine statement.  Either way, I’m not mad at it!

Another item I’m loving in this look are my Levi’s 711 Skinny Jeans.  I’ve never worn a pair of Levi’s until I was out shopping with a friend who said it is her all-time favorite brand.  Their jeans don’t have as much stretch in them, which can be a little challenging from the fit aspect.  However, they do hold everything in which is why I have really liked wearing them so far.  The Levi’s 711 skinny comes in an array of colors.  I gravitated towards the distressed white jeans because they’re the perfect summer staple that I can pair back to just about anything.  This includes stripes and pink velvet pumps!

bodysuits + body positive

I have been curious about the bodysuit trend and loved the way it looked on other people.  So I finally tried it, but realized that it pushed me outside of my comfort zone in a way I usually don’t talk about.  While I flaunt my curves in this post, it isn’t always an easy thing for me to do.   You might notice I usually wear things that aren’t too fitted and typically disguise my hips and waist.  I love high or mid-rise jeans, which is really what goes best with bodysuits, because they make sure everything is held in, smoothed out, and comfortable.  I usually pair them with tops that always come to my hips; I never wear anything cropped that might put my curves in plain site.  However, in this post I decided to step outside of my comfort zone by doing something completely different.

I have a love-hate relationship with my curves.  The love: I think they’re powerful because I have a lot of muscle within them, sexy and beautiful in their own way, and I know that I have certain assets that others would literally pay for.  The hate: I can’t wear everything that a size 2 can, shopping can be a big challenge when it comes to fit, and even though my husband thinks I look wonderful in everything (bless his heart) I struggle to see it that way.  There is a lot of discussion around being “body positive” and I think it’s important to state that while I struggle with this mindset, I 100% believe in this movement.  Body-positivity is something I strive towards every day.  There are people where this mindset comes naturally: they exude confidence, they’re comfortable in their skin and they love their body inside-and-out.  There are days where I am this person.  Every time I step into the gym I am reminded of how appreciative I am of the strength my body has and the beauty within that.  It reinforces the importance of physical fitness not with the intention of losing weight necessarily, but because it is how we honor our bodies through self-awareness and taking care of it’s well-being.  But this also means there are times when I want to breakdown and cry out of frustration when it doesn’t fit the mold I want it to.

Being body-positive is so important because it is directly linked with your self-image and self-esteem.  Our bodies should be cherished because they’re what get us through each and every day.  We depend on them every second of every moment.  I think it’s also important to state that being body-positive applies to you no matter what end of the scale you fall on or size range you fit into.  You should love the body that you were given because regardless of the flaws you see, they are a gift.  They should be respected.  However, that mindset isn’t always something that comes easily.  I hope that one day it does.  For now, I’ll be continuing to work on my mindset every day by practicing love and forgiveness towards myself.  I hope that you will do the same so that we can continue promote the beauty in the strength of women everywhere, both mentally and physically.

It’s officially Wednesday (happy hump day) and after a 3-day holiday weekend this week couldn’t be going by any slower.  I did not want to get out of bed this morning, so this t-shirt is just too perfect for the occasion.  Bring on the coffee!  I’m wearing one of the most comfortable t-shirts ever and I found a few that are very similar.  I love wearing it with leggings or these cute little knit pajama shorts.  I snagged a two-pack of these from Marshalls for under $20!  It was a killer deal.  I love that they have such a great selection of sleepwear at reasonable prices.

Happy Memorial Day! I hope you’re all having a great weekend with family and friends celebrating those who have served our country. Let’s make sure we take a moment of silence today to honor them today.

This outfit is perfect for a backyard cookout or an afternoon at the breweries with friends. I’ve mentioned before how much I love my new tassel necklace from Teal House Collection, but I didn’t get to show you how effortlessly it paired with a basic knit dress. It gives it just enough “umph” to make the look standout vs looking like something you just threw on. And this dress is ridiculously comfortable. It’s like wearing your pajamas without anyone knowing. By the way, I actually didn’t intend to over-play the tassel theme by pairing it with this saddle bag, haha! So if it’s too much for you, I completely understand. However, I think it makes it that much more fun.  I guess you can say I love to be consistent! 😂

Life has presented some “bumps in the road” recently and as a result I find myself leaning toward more casual items that make me feel comfortable, but still put together.  My go-to lightweight jacket right now is this classic trucker from Levi.  It has the right amount of stretch and goes with everything from jeans (hello Canadian tuxedo!) to summer dresses.  It’s easy to throw on at night when the temperatures start to cool down.  Hopefully we can hold the heat at bay for a while and enjoy the chillier temperatures at night.  Before you know it, it will be midnight and still 100 degrees.

Unfortunately this graphic t-shirt is pretty old, so I couldn’t find the exact one.  I linked another one that would be even better than this, so make sure to check it out.  The other stand-by these days are my Adidas Superstars.  I had a pair of these in high school and I’m so happy that they’re back in style!  Everyone needs a good pair of sneakers.  I love the classic white/black combo, but I want another pair.  Any suggestions on colors to go for?

latest obsession: william rast

My current obsession: anything by William Rast.  This post is not sponsored in any way.  I genuinely love every item that I have bought from William Rast thus far because regardless of whether it is a top or a pair of jeans everything has been very comfortable, affordable, and the fit is on point.  This off the shoulder top is one of my favorite pieces for summer because not only is it cute and lightweight, but it has extra little details that make it special: sweet grosgrain ribbon bow on each sleeve, the faux-smocking at the top (every southern girl loves smocking), and a perfect row of buttons going down the back (seen here).  The stripe gives the look of shirting, but when you get closer you notice it is a much more delicate fabrication.  I’m wearing the “Bringing Sexy Back” sculpted high rise skinny jeans, which are hands-down the most comfortable pair I have in my closet.  And yes, that really is the name of the jean!  I love the high waist, but the amount of stretch in these is pretty unbelievable.  They hug every curve and accentuate the best parts of your figure, while making sure you’re held together in all the right places.

In case you aren’t familiar with William Rast, here are a few tidbits about them: the brand was founded in 2005 by Justin Timberlake and his long-time friend Trace Ayala.  They value edgy, tailored product that encompasses the iconic American denim culture.  The heritage-inspired collections offer men’s and women’s premium denim and ready-to-wear, as well as shoes and accessories.

I fell in love with this denim off the shoulder top from as soon as I saw it.  The neckline is already flattering, as off the shoulder typically is, but the paper-bag gathered top is the best part. It adds femininity and playfulness that you just can’t resist.  What you can’t totally see here in this shot is the top does have bell sleeves.  The only down-side to sleeves like this is that they’re what I call “soup sleeves:” no matter what you do, if you reach for anything at the table you’re going to dip your sleeve right in whatever you are eating.  So when wearing bell sleeves, mind your manners!  Haha!

There is something about a great pair of jeans that you just can’t beat.  They’re casual, but easily dressed up for a night out; the effortless comfort and ease of denim is something that can’t be replicated.  The exciting part about the denim market right now is that it’s all about novelty: embroidered, beaded, printed, lace-up and mesh insets are a few of the big ideas you’ll notice on the market.  I pulled together some of the styles I’m currently coveting to give you a taste for what you’re in for this season and what I can’t wait to add to my closet!

While I love all of the jeans pictured above, I do have a few favorites.  The Paige pearl embellished skinny jeans in grey (left) are my number one choice, but for now I’m leaning toward the more budget-friendly sister from Zara on the far right.  I love the fact that they’ve mixed two opposing things, casual jeans and pearls, and yet it’s a perfect match!  I guess opposites really do attract.

Then came along the Boohoo light wash jeans up top with embroidered roses.  These are a no-brainer.  I can’t believe they’re only $49!  It’s hard to find that pretty of embroidery at that price point.  Grab it while you can!

Spending this Sunday catching up on some reading while I wait on laundry to finish drying and can’t help but share how much I love the content that Joanna Gaines and her team at the Magnolia Journal are creating.  There was the perfect amount of Fixer Upper necessities (i.e. “Everything You Want To Know About Subway Tile”) with how-to’s and recipes that resonate with her following.  I love the piece on making time for friendship and creativity through floral workshops with friends.  Flowers are just that small pop of pretty that we love to have in our homes, but rarely make time for.  I’m setting the intention today to start making little joys like this a habit because it is those small touches that not only represent your personal style, but bring a smile to your face.

I may not be the preppiest person, but as a southern girl I definitely appreciate all things prep!  For whatever reason I can’t resist a cute gingham top and this button down shirt is an absolute must.  I consider it a southern staple.  Best part is it’s on sale for less than $40 and it comes in six colors from Crown & Ivy, a brand found exclusively at Belk.

To make this top more my style I like to pair it with my favorite distressed skinny jeans from Express.  They fit perfectly and the high waist makes them super comfortable.  While they don’t have this particular pair in stock anymore, I’ve linked some new washes in the same body above.
